Sand Hollow is the name Sophie and Porter (along with the other neighborhood children) have given the empty lot across from our house. It is a fairly large lot full of tumble weeds and one large sand/dirt hill. It also has a mound of broken cement piled in the middle. Sand Hollow is an imaginary feast- type of location. It can be an army war zone, a desert, a beach with a sand dune for taking sleds, wagons, and other things down, a far away kingdom with a cement fortress... anyway I hope you are seeing all the possibilities this simple lot has to offer to a neighborhood full of kids.
Well last week the unimaginable happened. We woke up to find Sand Hollow under attack. Well an attack is how my children perceived it, in actuality the builder just broke ground for a new house. After watching the terrible sight for a few minutes out their window, Sophie decided something must be done! She gathered J and P to the table and informed them that signs were needed to protest what was happening to their beloved Sand Hollow. They drew pictures of trucks with red lines through them. Sophie wrote NO TRUCKS on each sign. Later that afternoon they walked around the neighborhood distributing flyers. I could see doors opening and Sophie informing their pals in the circle of the great tragedy... then calling them to action. Unfortunately, they were only able to rally a few brave hearts. They stood on the corner chanting, "No trucks" for some time. Their efforts were in vain though, the digging proceeded without care for the little band of protesters on the corner. As I watched this scene from the porch I could almost hear the theme song playing... They Paved Paradise and Put Up a Parking Lot. Although I wouldn't ever refer to Sand Hollow as a paradise, it was a land of wonder for a time and we will be sad to see it go... not sad to see the sand/dirt hill go though...
Sand Hollow will not only be in our memories, but forever in our carpet :)
